If you had automobile insurance, you should provide the complaint to your insurance company. They will provide you with an attorney and pay your damages at no cost to you (this is what your premiums pay for). If you did not have insurance, that creates some problems because it put your personal assets at risk. While you are permitted to represent yourself, it not recommended. Your lack of knowledge of legal procedure can cause you to lose the case. Moreover, public defenders are strictly for criminal matters. The only free attoney service is that your county may have a County Legal Services which provides free legal services in certain matters to those who can demonstrate financial need.
