Do I need to have insurance to protect my assets if I only have land and no house on it?

Sure! If somebody gets injured on your land and sues you alleging that you acted negligently, your insurance company will give you an atty to defend you and pay any damages that may result from that claim. Like any purchase, compare the to buy it to the value you receive from having it.
