can I switch from limited tort to full tort after an accident, but before any settlements or paperwork have been agreed to

You can switch at any time, however the switch will not affect the coverage in effect at the time of the accident.

The prior answer you received is correct. The switch will only effect any future matters. My guess is you found that the limited tort is preventing you from receiving full compensation for your injuries. Having limited tort (think of it as limited right to sue) is really a gamble that you will not be hurt in an auto crash. My suggestion is to ask your insurer for a quote on how much full tort (full right to sue) will cost you. If it's affordable to you then make the switch. Good luck!
