Sub Contractor - Mechanic Lein

Final draw on our construction loan is 14,000. Out of that the builder owes us 8000 for expenses we paid out of pocket that he didn't have funds to purchase. He wanted to give us a promisary note to pay us back in 6 months since he says he needs the full amount back to pay his sub contractors. We told him we would not do this. He is now saying that because we are doing this his subs are going to put a mechanics lein on our house because he has tapped out all his resources to come up with the money to pay them. Anything we can do to protect ourselves or advice on how to proceed.
