Legal Question in Social Security Law in Pennsylvania

Family member on SS

My wife and i have been looking for a simple answer yes or no. Her grandmother who is 65 years young has had numerous strokes and is in a deminishing state. My wife is in the will to receive both of the homes her grandmother owns. Now in the grandmothers current state she was told she had to cash in all of her life insurance policies and paid those ammounts for her hospital bills or something like that. What happens to the houses? We have been living there for a while put a lot of money into both homes and would love our children to stay there but are concerened that the Social Security or state will take them off of the estate! Please i need an answer before we keep putting money into something with no return!!!

Re: Family member on SS

This is not a Social Security matter. It will not ask for any reimbursement - it only pays a defined monthly benefit for retirement or disability. Her issue is medicare and other public benefit programs, if she is eligible. Medicare has limits as to what it will pay for nursing care and hospital bills. You need to re-post under eldercare/estate planning.

Better yet, contact an estate planning attorney who can draft documents to avoid medicare reimbusement. Although it may be too late.
