Legal Question in Social Security Law in Pennsylvania

social security benefits

I was a caring and conscientious teacher for over 33 years, but began having problems due to extremely high blood pressure(200/100) and anxiety. Near the end of my last year, I told my principal that I planned to take a year's med. sabbatical to try to recover, but not long before the end of the school year she accused me of an unfounded issue and told me, by email, that I was to appear in front of the superintendent at the end of the day. I suffered a ''nervous breakdown'' and could not return to my classroom. The union interceded and I used sick leave to end the year. After 5 years, two antianxiety drugs and two blood pressure meds, I still cannot drive near my old school let alone earn money to cover my medical insurance as a substitute. I even tried a job in retail, which I loved, but ended up running out when I had to deal with a minor problem. My nerves are so bad that I have a hard time dealing with my own grandchildren. Would I qualify for early benefits? I turned 60 in 2008.

Re: social security benefits

You are looking for Social Security Disability benefits, not "early retirement benefits" which you can get at age 62 (at a reduced rate).

You should apply at a Social Security office or online (if possible).

There are attorneys who specialize in Social Security Disability matters; in a case such as yours, it might be worth it to consult an attorney BEFORE you apply.

Good luck.
