Mom passed away w/o a will. she had 40+ shares with a value of $400 but a lawyer will cost more than shares-what to do?

You will have to find out how her property will be distributed (who will get how much?)per PA's intestacy statute.

If all she owned was $400 of stock, then it probably is not worth it to hire an attorney. However, I suspect that she may have owned at least other assets that can be sold and divided.

The court will probably allow an administrator to sell the shares, but the process may not be easy or quick, depending on the experience of the administrator.
