Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Rhode Island

Funeral Expenses

My father in law passed away last week. He is survived by his wife and son, my husband. His mother claims to have no money, assets or insurance and refuses to pay for the funeral. My husband signed the funeral agreement because she wouldn't. Are we liable? If we are left with this, we will be forced into bankruptcy.

Re: Funeral Expenses

If the funeral agreement provides that you are responsible for paying for the funeral if there are no other means of payment forthcoming, then . . . yes . . . you will be held liable. The terms of the funeral agreement are the controlling part of the contract as to who is liable for payment.
