Legal Question in Employment Law in Rhode Island

Discrimination at work place

Hi I desperatly need legal advice. I have been an emloyee for a ymca for 6 1/2 years. I have been an outstanding employee. I work part time. We were given 3 weeks notice of a mandatory meeting, I had plans made months prior for that date. This meeting was on a Sunday night, and I never work Sunday night so therefore did not think twice of making plans. All employees were told if they could not attend they must submit in writing why not. I wrote what my plans were as others I no did. I recieved a letter stating that because I did not attend this mandatory meeting, I will have a letter in my file used at review time. Others did not get this letter because the Y approved the reason why they did not attend. I feel they do not have the legal right to pick and choose who has the most valid reasons for not attending. I feel as if this discrimination because they chose the people who have what they call a good reason.

Re: Discrimination at work place

Pennsylvania law does not prohibit all discrimination. It only precludes discrimination based upon an unlawful classification such as race, religion, age or gender. Therefoe, an employer will be permitted in most instances to make determinations as to whether or not to accept an excuse for abscence from work.
