Legal Question in Employment Law in Rhode Island

Labor laws?

What do the law books say in regaurds to ''benifits'' that are required in the state of rhode island? My boyfriend recently started working for a securiy company at a hospital, and the lack of any ''benifits'' boggles my mind. They offer no medical plans ( only thing close is if they get hurt during work they get treated because they are at a hospital) no vacation time, personal days or anything to that effect. is this allowed?? To me, it seems very strange, i told him he s hould still look for a position with another security company that has such benifits. His argum, ent is that he has job security since they always need gaurds there. any help would be greatly thanked.

Re: Labor laws?

Yes, this is allowed. There is no requirement that a business offer its employees medical benefits. If your boyfriend can find a security guard position that offers such benefits, he certainly may quit this job and take that one. If every employer were required to provide medical and/or other benefits, they would simply deduct the cost of the benefits from the wages paid for the position or, if the cost of the benefits were too high, the business may not hire employees at all. There are wage and hour laws that require certain payments for work on holidays and overtime, but none (yet) that require health/medical benefits.
