Legal Question in Criminal Law in South Carolina

public defender?

I called the public defenders office yesterday for legal representation for a simple assault charge ands was told because it was municipal court and not general sessions, they would not represent me. A male friend of mine, who is older and experienced called them today and got a whole different response- they told him I had to go to the court house to get a public defender, wtf? what dso i do to get a public defender? Its amazing how these ''good ole boys'' try to push people around down here!

Re: public defender?

A Simple Assaut and Battery charge that originates in Municipal Court does not qualify for a Public Defender. There are some very limited exceptions to that. To apply for a Public Defender you need to fill out an application and send it to the Public Defender's office. You can get that application from their office or the court. You are welcome to email if you still need help. [email protected]
