Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

college tuition/health insurance

My son is 18, graduated from high school, is enrolled at a college in SC, where he is a legal resident. His father resides in NC and said his legal obligation ended with graduation from high school. Is he responsible for health insurance (or at least half of it), paying half of college tuition, and/or paying child support to our son while he is in college? Thanks.

Re: college tuition/health insurance

Unless the prior Order specifies otherwise, child support obligations typically end at the later of 18 or graduation from high school. College support is a completely different issue, which can be brought by the child against both parents, with different criteria, etc.

These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that you consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to you based on the facts of your particular case.
