Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

Power of Attorney

My father has been an alcholic and suffering from mental illness for the last 20+ years. He had been living with his mother for the past 6.5 years. She is now elderly and suffering from memory loss, body breakdown, etc. He is now homeless. My brother and I are concerned about his condition and want to do something. My brother lives in Atlanta, Georgia and my father lives in South Carolina and I live in New York. I am 23 and my brother is 18, and our parents are divorced.

Our father needs medical and physical attention. He needs shelter. Someone needs to be responsible for him and care for him. We are thinking about getting ''custody of him''; moving him down to the Atlanta area in an accommodating facility that would provide for his needs. We would have access to him and we can moniter his care and health. We need to know what our options are.

Re: Power of Attorney

It sounds like you need to have a guardian appointed for your dad. You can't do this in GA unless he moves here. This is somewhat complicated so if you would like to give me a call to discuss, feel free to do so. I don't charge for initial phone consultations.
