Legal Question in Family Law in South Carolina

My Sisters Divorce

My sister has been married for 20 years to a man who benefited from her family connections. He left her in July said he wanted out. To make a long story short he left her destitute they sold some property he spent all the money and now has told her he will kill her if she tries to get anything at all. He means it to. She had 2 attorneys who took her money but did nothing for her. We've told her to just let him (her estranged husband) have what he wants and to just come home. We don't have much but we can help her out with a place to stay. Will a family court judge just let represent herself and tell him just let him have it all and let me alone? We just don't have money to keep forking over to attorneys who in the end take the money and run. It's not worth her getting killed over a few pieces of old furniture if it was our Grandmothers. By the way no kids involved. 2nd marriage for both.

Re: My Sisters Divorce

The Court will allow her to represent herself if it determines that she is willing and able to do so. However, in order to approve any agreement, the Court has to determine among other things that (a) the agreement is fair and equitable and (b) there have been no threats, pressure or coercion.

These are complex issues, and it is important that they be handled correctly. Therefore, it is important that your sister consult an experienced family law attorney to find out what options are available to her based on the facts of her particular case.

It sounds as though your sister has not had a good experience with her choice of attorneys thus far. I'll be glad to make a referral for her if you will let me know the city in which she is located.
