Legal Question in Medical Leave in South Carolina

Do not believe what I am being told.

My son had his tonsils removed this morning. His doctor has said he has to stay home for ten days. My wife and I both work. She turned in the paperwork for family leave on Wednesday. Her H.R. rep. called her this afternoon saying he has decided she does not qualify. Is her H.R. rep. correct in denying this? There is no other family able to take care of him within 200 miles. He is 5 yrs. old. Thank You for your time.
