Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Divorce

I have a husband who has had financial problems since we have been married. I have thought about leaving before but am afraid of losing my house and my dogs. Today he hit me. I'm scarred to stay with him but don't know what to do about my home and dogs they are all I have. I want to keep the dogs but they are considered property and I'm afraid I would have to give him two, he cannot take care of them properly. He can hardly take care of himself he's close to bankrupt. I don't know what to do. I'm afraid now that he's hit me it 's just going to get worse.

Re: Divorce

You are not looking for legal advice, but an emotional or financial support network.

Talk with family and friends to address your underlying fears and THEN talk with a lawyer.

As you have framed the question you have essentially said you want a divorce but are afraid of the outcome and as a result you are willing to remain in what may well be a dangerous and physically abusive relationship. In other words you have in your own mind created a situation in which you will lose with any course of action you take, and legal advice is not really going to change that.

You might also want to take a couple of emotional steps back to try to determine whether the situation you describe having happened ("he hit me") is in fact a true danger and an ongoing problem or whether it is an outgrowth of temporary financial problems and not something which should cause you to abandon a marriage which may well have been good for several prior years.

I don't know whether the marriage is or is not something you might actually want to save, but I do know that decisions in the heat of anger are often bad decisions.
