Legal Question in Family Law in Tennessee

Don't women have rights in White County

Hi I am writing because my Mother was unexpectedly served with divorce papers a few days ago. The grounds for this divorce is unacceptable marital conduct. My mother is a recovering alcoholic that had a relapse. She did not go out and cheat on her husband, did not wreck a vehichle. In fact all she did was drink herself to sleep. My question is that her husband moved her here to TN after they were married. He now wants this divorce and is refusing to give her anything. Her name is not on the house or property because he refused to put it on there. She was able to bring some of her furniture and such that she had prior to the marriage. But he is flat refusing to let her have anything except her personal belongings. She has put monies and much labor into this property and home. The legal counsel we have spoke with tell us that the Judge that will be handling this is all for the men. One attorneys secratary stated that this Judge does not like it when anyone answers on their own without an attorney. So what can my mother so? It appears that women in this county do not have any rights. Any ideas?

Thank You

I'm not sure how they do things in White County but most counties have legal aid societies to help her. She definitely needs an attorney. Call the Vanderbilt Legal Clinic at Vandy or the Legal Aid Society for Middle Tennessee. They can help you.
