Legal Question in Immigration Law in Tennessee

how to change from a Candian resident to a us resident

I am an US born citizen. My husband was born in Canada. He moved to the US when he was 14. Moved back to Canada when he was 18, served 4 years in the Canadian Navy and then moved back to the US. He is now 44. He works full time, currently in the Nuclear power field. How do we get his citizenship changed to US? We have been married 1 year. However, he was previously married to another US born citizen for 9 years. He has a US Social Security card and TN drivers licence. Should we get a lawyer or can we just do the paperwork ourselves?

Re: how to change from a Candian resident to a us resident

Your question does not provide all the information needed. What matters is in what status your husband has been residing here in the US. He must have been a permanent resident for at least 3 years, or 5, depending on his circumstances, before he can apply for citizenship. If he does not have a permanent resident status, you may obtain one based on marriage, unless he had previous violations of the US. immigration law, criminal convictions and/or other obstacles. You may want to consult an attorney on this matter.
