Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Tennessee

I got served with a subpoena for witness from a lawyer's office representing an apartment complex I use to live in 3 years ago. I was not able to live there because of a domestic abuse case. The other party on the lease lived their as far as I know but may have left and the apartment complex is suing me for the rent that was not paid. Both my name and another person's name were on the lease. My question is how am I responsible for this and what can I do?

If your name was on a lease agreement and not removed from the lease when you vacated the property, you are liable for any charges incidental to that lease. I suggest that you consult with a lawyer in your county for representation to see what can be negotiated as to either a possible "lump sum" settlement or some sort of payment schedule. You may also have a right to proceed against the other person on the lease to obtain some sort of "contribution".
