Legal Question in Military Law in Tennessee

Seperation from af

My son has been in the AF 41/2 months. He is having trouble adapting to millitary life, says he's depressed and feels he can't take it. He reported this to his sargent and was sent to a sic ward(not a millitary facility)for evaluation. He said the facility has recommended seperation. i'm not convinced this isn't just a case of homesickness. Can you tell me how a seperation will effect his future as far as jobs, education and possibilty of joininng the guard? How long does a process like this generally take. Personel at this hospital are telling him he will be home in a few weeks.

Re: Seperation from af

Sometimes people simply cannot adjust to military life. They are separated administratively and they get a re-enlistment code that bars them from re-entry (why would the military make the same mistake twice?). It is doubtful he would be eligible to serve in the guard.

Your son would have to tell prospective employers the truth about his military service, and it might affect his future employability. He probably could not get a job with a civilian contractor for the military because he likely would not qualify for a security clearance.

He has made it 4.5 months; he should stick it out. It does get better. But, if he doesn't, he will have to answer some tough questions when employers ask him why he got out. Most employers believe if you get out before your term is up, you were kicked out as opposed to left voluntarily. That's been my experience anyway.

Good luck.
