Legal Question in Personal Injury in Tennessee

Do I need a attoney yet? I had a car accident almost a year ago where I hit another car in rear. I have full coverage insurance, but I got served papers saying this guy is sueing me for 35,000. I have given a copy of the papers to my insurance agent.

Generally a person who is sued who has insurance will be assigned a defense lawyer by the insurance company, but still has the right to employ their own counsel at their own expense. A person might be more inclined to hire their own attorney if there were coverage issues (ie, insurance company denying coverage on the claim) or if the potential judgment exceeds the policy limits of the insurance policy.

Generally it takes several weeks for an assigned insurance defense lawyer to start taking action on a case. If you were to receive any other papers about the lawsuit you would want to get them to your insurance agent also, and keep good records of what and when you give things to your agent.
