Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

I live in an apartment complex and submit my payment through a drop box in the leasing office. For August rent, I made two money orders out to the apt complex and dropped it off in drop box. Apparently, the complex has never received the payment; we are told from them that the drop box was not secured and the money orders might have been stolen. After calling the moneygram, I confirmed that one of the money orders were cashed but it will take 30-60 days to find out who cashed the money order. Now the apt complex is holding us responsible for the payment of August rent, including all late fees. Am I liable for payment? Do I have any power in this situation?
