Legal Question in Disability Law in Texas

Fire Department Discrimination

I am considered mentally disabled and have been for several years. I joined the local volunteer fire department. I have been on the department for a year and 4 months. I am the secretary of the department and nothing to do with my position has been affected by my mental status. When I joined everyone in the department knew about my disability and had no problem with it. Now I am being asked to resign my position as secretary and leave the fire department for trying to commit suicide 6 months ago. This incident did not and has not affected my duties or abilities as secretary. Can they legally discriminate against me because of my depression or mental status if it does not affect the fire department directly?

Re: Fire Department Discrimination

If that is the basis for the termination decision, it would appear to be unlawful. You should consult an employment law attorney to explore the situation, and determine what relief might be available.
