Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Texas

Verbal agreement between a racehorse trainer and a horse owner

We are trying to find out what we need to do. We have a verbal agreement with a horse owner and he has not paid for boarding, feed, nor 10% of the winnings since June 2008. We still have possession of the horse and the papers but he is threatening to file theft charges because he wants his horse back and does not want to pay. What do we do?

Hire a lawyer and make written demand for payment with a statement that you have a lien for care..and hopefully the horse is worth what you are owed..but if you win in Court you may get the horse..Some lawyers knowledgeable in horse business may take on partial contingency..but the letter may get you paid and get rid of the owner..
