Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Texas

Video Taping Financial Transactions

I was wondering if it is legal to video record financial transactions at a car dealership. With all the new laws that have just been passed, compliance is a huge issue. It seems obvious to me that if there was a tape of every closing, any compliance questions could be answered by pressing the play button. I know that I would have to post a sign stating that the customer is being recorded for their protection and mine, but is there anything else I would have to consider? I've heard that some states have made this manditory. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Re: Video Taping Financial Transactions

It is generally held that one has no expectation of privacy in the public workplace these days. One is almost always on camera somewhere in going about one's daily business.

Privacy issues will depend upon how the material is used. If personal financial information is revealed in your proposed plan to someone not authorized to have it, you will be in legal difficulty. If you are keeping the transactions to yourself to protect the transaction, and the information is not wrongfully disclosed, then you will be OK because you have access to it anyway.

Consult your business lawyer for more particulars concerning your rights and those of consumers with which you do business.
