Is the seatbelt law unconstitutional, and are there any people out there trying to get it done away with?

Re: Seat Belt Law and the Constitution

In this country operating a motor vehicle is legally held as a privilege, not a right. Reasonable restrictions upon the privilege, in the interest of human safety and the general good of society are not contrary to the constitution.

The seatbelt laws, then, are constitutional. I know of no organized effort to have them repealed.

They are designed in part to protect the rest of us from those who do not use the belts and would be hospitalized at public expense after being injured.
