Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Texas

Credit Reporting

I just received a call from a debt collector regarding a credit card debt which I stopped making payments on due to a long illness in October 2002. I know this is past the statute of limitations in this state for a debt, but the collected tried to tell me that since this debt was bought by his agency this year, that it would be reported as delinquent on my credit report until 2016. Is he telling me the truth or he just trying to trick me into making a payment in order to restart the statute of limitations? I thought the debt would leave my credit report in October of this year but he also told me that the statute doesn't begin to run until the debt is charged off which was in 2003. Now I don't know what the truth is.
