I received a paper in the mail from some investigation company saying that want me to pay for a check that was written in 2001, I do not remember this check. It was 2001, is this legal and or is this past some sort of limitations?

Ignore this letter. Ignore the followup letters (they will write to you again). Don't even open the followup letters; buy a bigger trash can if you need to.
If you hear from the police, do NOT ignore them.
