Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

career for a felon

I am writing you on behalf of my daughter Kendra Minnett. My daughter is in prison, and is wanting to go to school when she gets out. What kind of things can she go to school for? She was convicted for burg. of a habitation. Thank You

Re: career for a felon

Hello there,

Well, first just because she has a felony doesn't mean that she cannot benefit from an education.

The problem inlays that there are certain jobs that require you to have a State License and most jobs that require to be licensed by the State are not going to license a felon.

However, there are many successful people that have gone to prison that have done well despite the fact they have a felony conviction.

Just look at the actor Tim Allen. He is very successful actor and he is a convicted felon.

The owner of Microsoft also did not finish college and he is very wealthy.

Something, your daughter should look into is having the State pay for her education. She can actually earn a degree in prison.

If you have any further questions feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Erick Platten

Re: career for a felon

In this age of internet access and public records it is obviously more complicated to obtain a job with a felony record. I would suggest that she consider jobs that do not have licensing requirements. Usually if a person has to be licensed the background check is more thorough and they are screened more carefully. Depending on how old she was when she got in trouble, and other factors she may be able to explain the circumstances to an employer. Like all students just starting it is probably a good idea to get the basics under her belt and then see what interests her considering the limitations she's under. I am sure that a school counselor could be helpful in this area as well. Good luck!
