Hire an Attorney, and do not represent yourself.

Even if your charge is only a Class "A" misdemeanor, a conviction will affect you for many years to come. It is unlikely that you will be able to correctly assess your risks or opportunities in your own defense. It has been said that "A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client." This is doubly true for a non-lawyer. Your risk in this case includes up to a year in jail, plus significant fines and court costs. If you go in there by yourself, you are essentially relying upon the goodwill and mercy of both the prosecutor and the judge, and while you may get lucky, you also may not. If it was me, I'd hire a lawyer, preferably someone experienced in criminal law.
