Legal Question in Criminal Law in Texas

Unjust assault charge

Dear Sirs,

I was charged with assault, misdemeaner, Class A, in Harris County, Houston, Texas. Bottom line, I NEVER assaulted my girlfriend. She and I were involved in a tussle. I was trying to leave, she would not let me. She kept advancing towards me and I pushed her away from me. She tried striking me, I held her off of me, we lost our balance, fell to the ground. She was very intoxicated and angry(the officer knew this). I left. The neighbor called the police. She apparently went and talked to him (the neighbor). She does not remember what happened. The neighbor and her told the officer that I punched her. She knows that I did no such thing. Is willing to testify to that. I called to check on her, she said the police were there. I went back to settle the whole thing, told the police that I had pushed her off of me and was arrested. Said nothing else. I can not afford an attorney. Court appointed attorney wants to plea. I am not guilty of assault. Please tell me what I can do.

It is a tough situation. If you do not desire to take a plea and do not wish to continue with a court appointed lawyer, but desire to have a trial, the option most apparent would be to take a second job and make enough money to hire a private lawyer.
