Legal Question in Discrimination Law in Texas

I got laid off back in 1/13/11 and the past three months i am having an hard time to get a job. Can my ex employer talk bad about me when the hiring manager wants to call and get references?

If your former employer lies about you, and you suffer for it, you can sue him for slander. If he tells the truth, it isn't slander.

If I tell someone that you're a homosexual, it's slander, but only if it's false. If you're a homosexual, it isn't slanderous for me to tell someone that fact.
