Child Abuse / Emancipation

A friend asked me to look into this. If a 16-year-old is being beaten by their step-parent, can they file for emancipation?

A 16 year old must convince a court that he/she is self-sufficient and able to care of self. Abuse in and of itself is not a ground for emancipation. Physical abuse of a minor may be a criminal offense. Thought should be given to whether law enforcement authorities should be involved.
