Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Child support after adoption finalization.

I paid child support to a child born in Georgia. There were periods when I was out of work and the support got behind. I reside in Texas so the order to send money to Georgia was made through Texas. Three years ago I allowed the child to be adopted by a man the mother of the child married which terminated all my rights to the child including the obligation to pay child support. The state of Texas says I owe amost $5000 in back support, but Georgia says I only owe $1200. I have sent Georgia $1200 to close the case which should also clear the case in Texas according to Georgia DHS. Will I still owe Texas $5000?

Re: Child support after adoption finalization.

This appears to be a simple matter of accounting. The Texas claim is comprised of elements, past due child support, attorney's fees, administrative charges, court costs, etc. You have paid $1,200 and therefore to a certainty the Texas claims are reduced by that amount. You should check carefully the elements of the Texas claim and be sure that you are properly credited for the payments that you have made. However, you could still remain liable for either all or a part of the elements of the Texas claim that remain unpaid.
