divorce and adoption

My boyfriend is getting a divorce. He has raised his ex's daughter since she was born. She is not biologically his. She is almost 3 years old. How does he get visitation rights or is this even possible? Will he have to adopt her before they can file for divorce?

Thank you for your post. Your boyfriend has no legal standing with regard to the child therefore he cannot petition for visitation. Adoption as a precursor to divorce is highly unusual and may be problematic. He should consult with a family law attorney.
