Is it legal for the state to take half my Check?
I only make $8.00 an hour... If they took a quarter of it, I could make it but BARELY.
I can't afford my rent, let alone food.
Is it legal for them to do that?

It is legal for a garnishment of up to 50% of your paycheck if the garnishment is for support. Yes, this is legal.
