If Im legally married but currently seperated can I file for custody of my kids?

What does "file for custody" mean?

Do you want a divorce? You can ask for custody in connection with a divorce.

Do you want to stay married, but get a child support order from the Court? You can file a petition that merely asks for an order that (a) you have custody and (b) the other parent has to pay you child support.
