Legal Question in Family Law in Texas

Parent Ownership

If I am a 13 year old still living under my parents' care and I buy an Ipod Nano with money that I earned myself, can my parents take that away from me as a punishment or would that be considered stealing, or something similar?

Re: Parent Ownership

First, if you are really 13, and you found and posted this question yourself, then let me commend your 'smarts'.

Secondly, for the most part, until you are 18 and have moved out of the house, your parents 'own' you and they 'own' all your stuff.

You earned that Ipod (good job btw) because they let you. You are not of age. Yes they can punish you by taking it away.

You seem very smart and very industrious. I would suggest that you sit down at the table with them - no yelling, no rolling eyes, even temper, even tone of voice -- and demonstrate to them how mature you are. That you wish to negotiate what your consequences are. It should be something that 'hurts', but could it be a grounding from something you did not earn yourself. You get my drift. Good luck. TCL
