step parents estate rights to deceased step child

My mother-in-law, survived her late husband, who was left as benificery of his son's estate. Do my mother-in-law have any rights to her step son's estate?

The step-son's estate should have been merged into the husband's estate. So, she would get all of the step-son's estate that had passed to the father. Without a will or an inventory of the son's estate, I don't know what that would be.
