Can I do This
It is my understanding that a petition has to be filed for grandparent visitation. Can I do this or do I have to retain an attorney for this

If you know how to do these things, nothing prevents you from representing yourself. If you don't know how to do it, hire an attorney. He does these things on a regular basis.

Certainly.
You can go to any law library and try to figure it out yourself.
Of course, I believe hiring an attorney is more effecient in the long run.
