name change
Do I have to petition to a court to change my name or can I just begin using my preferred (last) name thru social security, my employer, the dmv, etc.

There is a legal procedure to change your name. If you start "using" your preferred last name, you're going to get everything messed up. If this is what you want, spend the money and get it done right.
