Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Texas

What options do I have in recovering money I loaned?

I just wanted to know what options I have in recovering money I loaned to my brother. I loaned him a couple hundred dollars. I can't seem to get him to pay it back. He borrowed a couple thousand dollars from my mother and has never paid her back either. Is there anything that I could do such as filing a lein on assets or something like that?

Non-paying brother

First, I'd suggest sending him a letter asking him to pay up by a date certain. Keep the letter polite and business-like. If he doesn't reply or pay, then I'd suggest you investigate small claims court in your jurisdiction. It is much cheaper than "regular" court, you won't incur attorney fees, and you'll have a judicial order for him to pay if you win. Call the clerk of the court of your local state court for how to go about this where you live. Further, I suggest you consult with an attorney in your jurisdiction for any further options that are unique to where you live. Good luck!
