Legal Question in Immigration Law in Texas
Citizenship via Marriage?
My girlfriend is a citizen of Chile. She and her family entered the United States a year and a half ago on tourists' visas. They overstayed their 90 day visas to live and work here in the United States, and as such are considered illegal immigrants. My girlfriend and I are no longer minors and we want to get married so that she can have U.S. citizenship. My question is first, is this possible, and second, how and where would we need to go about doing this? Would we need a lawyer? And would us getting married in any way put in jeopardy her family's status living and working in the U. S.? Thank you very much; I appreciate your help and advice in this matter.

If you are a citizen you can marry her and do what you need to do to sponsor her for lawful permanent residence. Citizenship comes later. You could find some guidance about how to proceed at the INS web site. Her parents will not be involved.
