All insurance companies have become bad about avoiding payment on legitimate claims; Farmers is among the worst. The only effective way of getting an insurance company to pay is to hire an attorney. After all, the insurance company knows that you really cannot do anything to them until you hire a lawyer. Even though lawyers charge fees (usually 35-40% of the "recovery"), most people would agree that "60-65% of something" is a lot better than "100% of nothing." And, in some cases, if your case actually goes to trial, you may be entitled to an award for attorneys fees.

As to getting a refund for your homeowners premium, GET INSURED WITH ANOTHER COMPANY FIRST, then cancel your policy with Farmers and request a refund. You will only get back a prorated refund (less the amount of insurance you "used"), but you WILL get a refund.
