Legal Question in Employment Law in Texas

If a Company requires staff to attend a two day conference 165 miles from office are they required to pay mileage and compensation for travel time on the staff's personal time? The staff has been told they will be terminated ifthey do not attend the conference. Can the Company legally terminate for this cause? Also the conference begins at 8:00 A.M. with no provisions made for the night before the conference requiring the staff secure lodging at their own expense or leave at 5:00 A.M. to reach conference on time creating a hardship for staff.
