Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Texas

Termination of Apartment Lease

Hello,

My current landlord and I agreed to terminate our lease early without any other required payments.

One of the bullet points said I couldn't seek the advice from a governing body that deals with tenant/landlord law. First question is are you a governing body? If not, then please answer my next question. Is it legal for her to put that into contract? B/c if I didn't sign that, I would automatically be forced to continue with my lease and unsafe living conditions in the apartment currently. So either way, I don't have a choice. Is that lawful?

Can she retaliate by speaking unfavorably of me to future potential residences?

Re: Termination of Apartment Lease

Is this agreement a settlement and compromise? It is common in settlement agreements, for one or both parties to waive their rights. You had the right to seek redress in the courts, but if you waived that right, and the agreement is otherwise enforceable, then, you waived that right. You apparently had a legal right to sue the landlord, but chose to waive that right, and were released from the terms of the lease. Without review by an attorney, of all of the terms, and the specific situation, it is impossible to say if the agreement is enforceable.
