closing on my new home

my wife and i are closing on our new home. we got a construction loan and house was build. now that we want to close the contractor is advising the mortgage company that we owe him around $8,000.00 more. can we close the loan without his signature. the contractor wants me to sign that i owe him that money inorder for him to sign. please let me know what i can do to resolve this matter.
