Legal Question in Social Security Law in Texas

Social security benefits

I have a 16 year old that was placed with me voluntarily by her mother who has drug and alcohol problems. The 16 year old has been with me for 5 years but has i have only been name her guardian since April 2008. Her mother has received SS death benefits for the minor until June of 2008. the benefits were transferred to me then. Now the minor has chosen to return to her mother but I am afraid she will spend the money on drugs again. Can the benefits remain in my name so I can provide the funds to her?

Re: Social security benefits

Yes, you can apply to the SSA to be named an administrator or a guardian - not sure of the language right now. See the SSA.

Good Luck.
