Are churches in Texas required to be 501(c)(3) organizations in order to be tax exempt?

No - churches are automatically tax-exempt organizations, and are not required to apply for 501(c)(3) status. (Many do, however, for various reasons.) Tax-exempt organizations under 501(c)(3) are restricted in the amount of lobbying and political activities they may conduct.
