Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Texas

Father's Death

My father passed away last June. He was a resident of the state of Texas, but was killed in Louisiana. His wife is deceased and I'm his only child. I received a settlement from the insurance company of the man who hit and killed my father. I haven't kept in touch with him and I don't know if he had a savings account, checking account, life insurance, etc. How can I find out if he did? Also, how do I go about finding out if there are any other benefits I'd be entitled to? I'm clueless on where to turn or who to ask.

Re: Father's Death

There is no easy answer to your question. If his death had been very recent, you could have had his mail transferred to you, and seen what mail came in for him. However, at this point you'd have to get access to his papers, etc., start combing through them, and making inquiry to the various banks and lending institutions in the area.

You should enter his estate into probate in the county where he resided, so you could have authority to gather his assets, if any.
